Upgrading Emergency Power Generators: A Large Telecommunications Company

The Challenge

A large telecommunications company required upgrades to its emergency power generator controls in one major metropolitan data center. The 20-year-old ISO switchgear supported three Caterpillar 3516 2MW generators and supplied emergency power to three 1600A automatic transfer switches (ATSs). The company expanded its facility, adding an additional 2000A ATS in need of a fourth generator to support the n+2 requirement. The ISO price to add the fourth generator cubicle exceeded the company's budget. Other problems included a failed touchscreen and ISO's lack of service.

The Solution

Prime Power upgraded the existing system to meet all specifications as designated by the design engineers. The solution replaced all controls with new digital controls, including Woodward Easygens, Basler generator protection relays, and GE Max-on redundant RX3i PLCs. The new breaker section included Square D Master Pack breakers that were connected to the existing switchgear.

The Benefit

The transfer of controls for each of the generators was completed successfully without interruption to the facility. With thorough planning, each generator was recommissioned with the new controls and returned to service within two weeks
