Arc Flash Analysis
and Studies

Prime Power specializes in evaluating the potential arc flash risks of all kinds of facilities, including commercial, industrial, healthcare, and manufacturing plants.

We routinely assist facility managers and engineering groups, as well as health and safety managers by providing training and services related to the implementation of comprehensive issues with an emphasis on NFPA 70E programming and analysis.

As required by the National Electric Code (NEC) and National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA-70), Prime Power Services will include engineering and research time and labor to provide the following assessment and study per NFPA-70E - 130.5:

  • Gather and confirm the data from the existing equipment
  • Perform a short circuit study
  • Perform an Arc Flash Energy Study
  • Install Arc Flash Hazard Labels on the distribution equipment
  • Train Personnel

Prime Power Arc Flash Analysis and Studies

Data Collection

  • We will conduct an onsite audit of your electrical distribution equipment to compare to the shared one-line diagram.
  • Utility Source Data & Configuration
  • Customer will likely need to request some information from Georgia Power/Utility
  • Facility Impedance Data
  • Distribution Equipment Data & Specifications
  • Overcurrent Device Data & Settings

Incident Energy and Flash Protection Boundary Calculations

We will provide calculated incident energies and protection for each piece of distribution equipment included in the facility audit and system model. Incident energies are calculated according to IEEE 1584 specification and provided in calories per square centimeter. These calculations are then used to generate appropriate labeling for each piece of equipment detailing required PPE to be worn during servicing and the minimum safe approach distance for personnel not wearing the required PPE while the equipment is being serviced.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements & Labeling

Incident energy calculations are used to determine the appropriate PPE according to NFPA 70E to be worn while servicing equipment. Each piece of distribution equipment is then provided with a label detailing required PPE to be worn during servicing and the minimum safe approach distance for personnel not wearing the required PPE while the equipment is being serviced.

Arc Flash Analysis Report and Recommendations

We will provide a comprehensive report of our arc flash analysis and calculations detailing the following:

  • All input Data
  • Any Assumptions Made
  • One-Line Drawing & System Model
  • Calculated Results
  • PPS Recommendations
  • Recommendations for reducing incident energy exposure levels
  • Arc Flash Labels will be provided and affixed to each panel requiring PPE

Safety & Training

We will provide training to facility personnel by an EGSA Certified Engineer/Technician covering:

  • Standard Arc Flash Safety Practices
  • Proper Interpretation of safety labeling
  • Relevant codes and standards
  • Demonstration of proper application
